NEWICK LOCKDOWN DOORSTEP PROJECT
Well, 2020 was pants, wasn’t it?
Me and my wonderful partner still did a fantastic project…
This is a selection of photos from the Newick Lockdown Doorstep Project
Taken during ‘Lockdown 1.0’ from May-June 2020.
These black & white images are from a series of interviews by Alexandra Harrison, with photographs by Sullivan George, of the residents of Newick, East Sussex, enquiring how Lockdown had impacted and effected them.
Why is it called a ‘Doorstep Project’?
The interviews and photographs were taken at a distance to comply with the social distancing regulations in force at the time, with the residents at, or near, their doorsteps!
The photos were taken quite quickly with minimal gear at the end of a short interview by Alexandra Harrison. I used A Sony A7iii with 24-15mm f4 lens, and where needed a small 200W/s flash with a 60cm softbox.
The residents were asked how Lockdown had effected them.
The abiding feeling conveyed from the interviews was of the strength of community in the village that helped everyone pull through the difficult time. It was both humbling and warming taking part in this project. In this gallery there is an ‘i’ icon in the top RHS of each image. Clicking it reveals a part of their response to the question.
A 124 page book of colour photographs with the interviews was published in December 2020 (ISBN 9781800490901)
The proceeds of the book sales go towards the St.Peter & St.James Hospice, a hospice in the neighbouring parish of North Chailey.
